New Year, New Goals

January 02, 2011

Welcome to 2011!
I hope that the first 2 days of this year have been good to you so far.
I have already decided that the last 2 years have been about me and my weight loss journey... so 2011 will NOT be focused on weight loss.  Yes, I want to lose about 15 more pounds (depends on how much I've gained this week... eek!), but it is not about that anymore.  Its hard to change focus, but it is what I need to do for myself this year.

I declare 2011, the year of a healthier me!
You see in Jan of 2009... you would have found this person here...
Me - Jan 2009
Then in January of 2010 - 1 year ago... you would have found this person
Me - Jan 2010
This year you find this person...
Dec 2010
you might be thinking... yes, but you are still the same person. That is a secret I will let you in on... you see... when you have lost 116 pounds, you are NOT the same person anymore. There is no way you can be. Everything has changed! Lots of people will say "but you are still the same person inside."  No, sorry, you really aren't.  It is something I cannot fully explain, and you don't understand until you've been here. so you'll just have to trust me on this.

Being a new person... I for the first time have non-weight related goals.  I finally have the time and energy to focus on other things.  I LOVE THAT!  Seriously, I love that I feel that I can finally set non-weight related goals.

First the things I left in 2010... I decided there were a few things I wanted to leave behind in 2010:
1) Negativity - about the situations life throws at me and about myself.
2) Anger - about the situations life throws at me, about pretty much anything and everything.  I have what you would call an explosive personality.  I want to work on that.  I'm looking to make into reality the statement "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff."

Now that that is taken care of what are the things I want most for 2011?  What are my goals?
1) Make a Healthier Me - Yes this is vague, but I do have specifics around how:
-- eat more whole foods.  Cut out as much processed foods as possible.  Shop the outside of the store.  Get in a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and veggies on more days than not.
-- decrease my body fat percentage through exercise.  Get some sessions with a personal trainer to help with this, and also to help measure my current body fat percentage.
-- strive to be emotionally healthy through positive self-talk.  No more putting myself down.  No more negativity, and limits on anger.

If all of these things added up to losing about 15 more pounds, I would be ecstatic.
If not, I will be OK with that too.  I'm not really feeling that last statement, but I'm trying to tell myself that.  If you say it you will believe it.

2) Get pregnant - Yes that is a goal.  I want to have a baby.  I want to conceive that baby in 2011.  I'm not getting younger you know.  You might think... but you don't really have control over that?  Yes, there is some truth to that, but I will exert all control that I have in my power, and all the prayers I have in my heart.  If this means I need to see a doctor for "help" I will do that.  Enough said.

3) Run a 10k in 2011 - If #2 happens quickly this may not happen, but right now, I am eyeing a race that is on April 30th, 2011.  I plan on starting my training very soon, and using that as motivation to get me through the dreary winter months of exercising indoors.
There you have it.  Those are my goals.  They are written down for anyone with a browser to see.  I feel like these are most concrete yearly goals I have ever had, and that feels empowering!

I can't wait to walk through 2011 with you as we both watch these goals become a reality.

What goals do you have for 2011?  What are you doing to make those goals a reality?

  1. Awesome you! What a transformation! I also started my health journey in Jan 2009 and this month marks 2 years of being healthy. Just read your Story - I also had pre-eclampsia and was not as lucky as you. (we lost our first child) Then in subsequent pregnancies I had gestational diabetes. Did I change my lifestyle? No. Not until I got diabetes myself did I begin to take my health seriously. Many years later than you. I applaud you for getting healthy at such a relatively young age!

  2. Look at you! I can even see your color bone now! You are beautiful! I have to agree with being a different person inside. I have lost 126 lbs and I am not the same person.. even the hubs tells me this. He says I don't joke about my weight all the time. I know I was way more self-conscious and insecure and that is part of the "freedom" I feel now. I'm sure you can relate.

I love your goals! I want to run a 10k in 2011 too. I hope the timing to have another baby works out how you'd like it to. That is exciting!!

    Happy New Year!

  3. Awesome goals Sarah! Two of ours are the same! I would love to conceive in 2011 as well, but I would REALLY like to run a 5k. I haven't located a race yet, but I have been searching the interwebs for an opportunity.

I sincerely hope you and hubby find yourselves pregnant sooner than later!

  4. I love your goals and you look awesome in that Dec 2010 picture!!! You are doing a good thing by making your goals about being healthier and not neccesarily about losing. As I have told you before your story inspires me, but more than that your maintanence inspires me because I know I can lose this weight. It will be keeping it off that I will have the most difficult time with. Great goals and I hope they all come true for you!
